the great collapse of the finite revolution
strange and surreal is totenbett, arizona: steeped in local history and lore, home to world-renowned artist henry von claude, and proud to house "the bar at the center of the universe." also served as ground zero for the beginning of the end of the world we thought we knew: because totenbett is located very particularly, with direct access to the space between the edges of everything and nothing.
spanning nearly three decades if you don't count the town's founding history, these eight loosely connected stories each emphasize totenbett's bizarre charm, and how it affects both residents and out-of-towners alike. do make an attempt to drive through on your next road trip ("show your love for the manhattan dove!"), and be sure to grab a bite at jonathan's landing before you go: best fish fry in town!

orange cream
drawing from a diverse range of influences--from jean genet's a thief's journal to aldous huxley's brave new world and robert a. heinlein's stranger in a strange land--orange cream is a follow-up to the stories first introduced in the great collapse of the finite revolution. not a proper sequel, but a contemplation of what totenbett looks like in a future resulting from the circumstances surrounding the town's seeming demise: a corporate-dominated society where time is soft and identity is fluid, politics divisive and speech restricted; a consumer-driven, moneyless world of digital transportation and human parthenogenetic reproduction.

bottles and cans
bottles and cans recounts daniel eduardo martinez's life journey, detailing struggles with alcohol, relationships, and the pursuit of his culinary career. through personal anecdotes and reflections, it is an exploration of addictive behavior, redemption, and the quest for identity--from arizona to texas, to new york and back again to arizona: a testament to the often tangled morass of life and the spirit of those who overcome imperfect and sometimes terrible circumstance.

i write the words, but i yell within
comprised of five loosely but fundamentally-connected segments, i write the words, but i yell within is a book of gritty stories in verse: avadore, woman silenced for eternity; jamaal, serial killer who turns to his dead mother for guidance and instruction; reese, jamaal's hard-living, estranged uncle; and wheelchair-bound mister fred swanson, simultaneously grieving his role in a vehicular manslaughter and attempting to find meaning in life through both his employees and his curious, opinionated grandson.

bubbidy
as an autobiographical novel, bubbidy conceptually runs more toward fancy: first trailing a seemingly demonic caravan of cigar-chompers and horse-whippers before losing the boy entrusted to his care, then wandering the mysterious world of in-between in which our nameless hero finds himself. located somewhere between life and death, contemplating the struggles of living, the hope of dreaming, and the inevitable processes of losing and finding oneself through various life stages, bubbidy is an invitation to consider mortality within the cyclic framework of birth, life, death, and rebirth.

olive or brie
tangentially related to the short novel bubbidy, olive or brie centers around the lives and characters of merrotinay, arizona--especially oliver (ollie) and bri, sometimes lovers and always business owners in a tourist-dependent, small dying town: ollie is a writer and owns merrotinay's only remaining bookstore, while bri owns and operates her deceased grandmother's antique store in the heart of the downtown district. with her father's death date and her absent mother's birthday on the horizon, bri struggles with her past while ollie navigates his feelings of self-worth in a world both judgmental and progressive.

better the weather when
better the weather when is a fine exploration of human connection, the search for meaning, and the philosophical inquiries that arise from everyday interactions: a criss-cross-country journey representing the convolution of life, love, and the pursuit of understanding in a world filled with contradictions and uncertainties.
presented entirely in the form of dialogue, better the weather when reflects upon life being about the people one meets and the connections one makes, even through mundane conversation. a prequel to olive or brie.

merro bones
merro bones is the hardback, omnibus edition of all three of the "little books," also referred to as the "merrotinay books" (bubbidy, olive or brie, and better the weather when). each narrative is presented in a minimalist style that captures the essence of hope and resilience, showing that despite hardship, there is always the possibility of healing, connection, and regeneration.
