bottles and cans recounts daniel eduardo martinez's life journey, detailing struggles with alcohol, relationships, and the pursuit of his culinary career. through personal anecdotes and reflections, it is an exploration of addictive behavior, redemption, and the quest for identity--from arizona to texas, to new york and back again to arizona: a testament to the often tangled morass of life and the spirit of those who overcome imperfect and sometimes terrible circumstance.

comprised of five loosely but fundamentally-connected segments, i write the words, but i yell within is a book of gritty stories in verse: avadore, woman silenced for eternity; jamaal, serial killer who turns to his dead mother for guidance and instruction; reese, jamaal's hard-living, estranged uncle; and wheelchair-bound mister fred swanson, simultaneously grieving his role in a vehicular manslaughter and attempting to find meaning in life through both his employees and his curious, opinionated grandson.
